How Riot Plans To Stop AFK League Players

Now we all know League of Legends doesn’t have the best player base (largely toxic). But while toxic verbal banter is kind of expected in any competitive game, what Riot is truly trying to change is the large amount of afk league players. We all know afk league players isn’t some rare thing and in reality, just ruins the game for everyone else. Riot stated that about 9% of players worldwide engage in consistent AFK behavior. When you keep in mind that Riot defines AFK in two different ways, people who idle during matches and people who just leave the game entirely. So what’s that new plan to stop these afk league players? Let’s jump into it and find out!

First, let’s take a look at what Riot does now to players who tend to afk. Right now, the worst those players can get is a queue delay: “Queue Delays are a speed bump on an offending player’s way to their next few games: Upon clicking the play button, the queue blocks them behind a short-timer. The purpose of this is to change behavior,” says Riot.

While this system does seem to be a pretty solid one people still continue you afk and ruin games. As a result of this Riot has been working on a new system they are starting to try out where instead of queue delays, the afk offenders will now be getting escalating penalties of between 1 day and 14 days of no ability to queue at all.

“We’re removing the player from the population for a while so they can’t continue to AFK in games,” says Riot.

Riot is essentially making the afk league players afk for even longer without them wanting to. I find it almost poetic justice and hope this system can do a good part in not only fixing the problem of afk league players but also the community as a whole.
