Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was reported by comicbook.com to have around a $71 million opening weekend beating out its 2020 predecessor: Sonic the Hedgehog which had also bested every other video game movie at the time with a $58 million opening weekend.
With the amazing opening weekend Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had that brings us to three recent video game movies to have performed very well as compared to the abyssal video game movies of yesteryears. It one not only shows the influence video games have in pop culture but also gives me high hopes for future video game movie adaptions.
There are countless fantastical and very well made stories in video games and seeing more of those come to life would only make me happy as an avid gamer myself. The Halo TV series over on Paramount Plus is another video game adaption that has come to life this year and has shown some promise while not being perfect.
Overall as a whole the idea of the gaming industry expanding into other forms of media is something I can only see as a positive thing. Whether it’s movies like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 or things like Epic Game buying Bandcamp to reach into the music industry a bit more, I love the idea of the gaming world expanding into so much more!
