Epic Games bought Bandcamp was not something I had on my 2022 bingo card yet here we are. The Fortnite creator Epic Games while known for way more than just that now has made a move into music with the acquisition of Bandcamp.
For those of you that don’t know Bandcamp is an online record store and music community where passionate fans discover, connect with, and directly support the artists they love. The company is based in Oakland California and was formed back in 2008.
“Epic and Bandcamp share a mission of building the most artist-friendly platform that enables creators to keep the majority of their hard-earned money.” was one of the most telling things said by Epic when announcing the deal. As well all know the creator community is massive within gaming and the two can even be seen as being hand in hand, With the acquisition Epic will further be able to reach their hand into that creator community and open it up for more people than just gamers.
Even with the news that Epic Games bought Bandcamp not all that much should change for the company. It is said that Bandcamp will operate as a standalone marketplace and music community, and it will continue to be led by CEO and co-founder Ethan Diamond.
I’m sure Epic and Bandcamp will have overlapping projects such a music within games coming to mind first, but regardless we are excited to see what this news will bring!
Epic isn’t the only gaming platform making moves, Sony Buys Bungie For $3.6 Billion.
