CD Projekt Red and Digital Scapes have been working closely on Cyberpunk 2077 since 2018.
The developers of Cyberpunk 2077 just announced their acquisition of the Canadian development studio, Digital Scapes. Digital Scapes was founded in 2012 by lead veterans of BioWare, Relic, and Radical Entertainment. Together, these vets have some hardcore experience in creating successful games.
The acquisition strengthens a long-lasting partnership between the firms and will help bring Cyberpunk to the next level.
“Digital Scapes has put in a great deal of work during the making of Cyberpunk 2077, assisting with the development of the game and optimizing its various features. ” – Pawl Zawondny, CD Projekt Red CTO
Zawondry is confident the new acquisition of Digital Scapes will be extremely beneficial for the company and will help CD Projekt Red “perfect our technologies and broaden our competencies in this respect.”
The studio will be renamed CD Projekt Red Vancouver, and will work together with the other locations in Warsaw, Wroclaw, and Krakow for “upcoming projects.” As of right now, we are pretty much in the dark as to what this refers to, but we can guess it’s aimed at a multiplayer aspect of Cyberpunk 2077.
Interestingly enough, Cyberpunk was definitely projected to be a standalone game with no clear indication of multiplayer elements. It’s very possible that CD Projekt Red is taking a different approach, especially after the not-so-stellar release the game had. Also, note that the lead gameplay designer has left the studio.
Digital Scapes is “very excited” to join the CD Projekt Red team and wants to strengthen the bond they already had with the company. Getting rebranded to the Vancouver hub and working more tightly with other headquarters will ensure even better work going forward.
